Quick answer

Why is email still worth doing?

Because it is the only marketing channel you own outright. Your Google rankings depend on an algorithm, your social reach depends on a platform, your ads stop the day you stop paying — but your email list keeps working, and nobody can change the rules on you.

For a service business the highest-value use is almost never the newsletter. It is follow-up — the enquiry who did not book, the customer who has not been back in fourteen months, the quote that went quiet. That work runs automatically once it is set up, and it costs nothing per send.

Why lists go stale

Three reasons your email list is not producing

Almost every Alberta business we start with has at least two of these.

01

The list is sitting in a system nobody touches

Hundreds or thousands of past customers in a booking system or spreadsheet, never contacted since. That is the cheapest revenue available to most businesses, and it is usually the last thing anyone gets around to.

02

There is no follow-up when someone does not book

Most enquiries do not convert on first contact. Without an automated sequence, those people are simply lost — not because they chose a competitor, but because nobody followed up twice.

03

Everyone gets the same message

A past customer, a cold enquiry and a current client need different emails. Sending all three the same newsletter trains people to ignore you, and unsubscribes the ones who were closest to buying.

What we set up

Email marketing services

Automations that run without you, and campaigns worth sending.

Automated follow-up sequences

Enquiry nurture, quote follow-up and post-visit sequences that run the moment someone comes in, without anyone remembering to send them.

Reactivation campaigns

Bringing back customers who have not been in touch for months. Usually the highest-return campaign we run for a new client.

Newsletters worth opening

Written to be useful rather than promotional, at a cadence you can sustain.

List segmentation and hygiene

Splitting the list by relationship and cleaning out addresses that damage your deliverability.

CASL and consent management

Canada’s anti-spam rules are stricter than most templates assume. We set consent capture and record-keeping up correctly.

Reporting on revenue, not opens

Which sequence produced which booking, tracked back through LinkBuffer Cloud or your CRM.

How we start

Clean, automate, send

Timeframes below are typical ranges and depend on how your list is currently stored and what state it is in.

Audit the list and consent

We find where your contacts actually live, check consent status, and clean out what will damage deliverability.

Typically week 1

Build the automations

Follow-up and reactivation sequences written, built and tested before a single live send.

Typically weeks 2–4, scope dependent

Send and refine

Campaigns go out on an agreed cadence, with reporting on what produced enquiries and what did not.

Ongoing, monthly reporting

Email marketing questions Alberta businesses ask

What is a good email open rate?

Benchmarks are less useful than they used to be, because Apple and other providers now pre-load images and inflate opens artificially. Treat open rate as a rough trend rather than a number to compare against an industry average. The figures worth watching are clicks, replies, and bookings attributable to the send — those cannot be faked by a privacy proxy.

Do Canadian anti-spam rules apply to us?

Yes. CASL applies to commercial electronic messages sent to or from Canada, and it is stricter than the rules most email templates are built around — it requires provable consent, clear identification and a working unsubscribe. We set consent capture and record-keeping up correctly, but this is a legal matter and you should confirm your obligations with your own advisor; we are not lawyers.

Can we email our past customers?

Often yes, under CASL’s implied-consent provisions arising from an existing business relationship — but those have time limits and conditions, and they are not a blanket permission. We will help you work out which parts of your list are safe to contact and which need consent refreshed first, and recommend you confirm the approach with your advisor.

How often should we email?

Less often than most guides suggest, and more consistently. For a typical service business, once or twice a month for the newsletter plus automated sequences triggered by behaviour is plenty. The automations do most of the earning; the newsletter mostly keeps you remembered.

Do we need a separate email platform?

Not necessarily. If you already use LinkBuffer Cloud, email, SMS and the CRM are in one place, which makes attribution much easier. If you are on Mailchimp, Klaviyo or similar and it works, we will use it. We are not going to migrate you for the sake of it.

What is the fastest thing we could do with email?

Usually a reactivation campaign to past customers. The list already exists, the relationship already exists, and the cost per send is effectively zero — so it tends to pay back before anything else we build. That is normally where we start.

Do we own the list?

Yes, and you should be able to export it in full at any time. Any platform that makes leaving difficult is a platform to avoid. We set things up so the list is yours regardless of who manages it.

Do you work with businesses outside Edmonton?

Yes. We have offices in Edmonton and Calgary and work across Alberta. Email work is done remotely — what matters is access to your list and your CRM.
