Quick answer

What does content marketing do for a local business?

Content marketing earns visibility by answering the questions your customers ask before they are ready to buy. For a local business that means service pages, city pages, and genuinely useful articles — each one built around a real search, not a topic someone thought sounded good.

What changed recently is who reads it. Google’s AI Overviews and assistants like ChatGPT now answer many questions directly, pulling from pages they can parse. Content written as one long unbroken essay does not get quoted. Content with clear questions, direct answers and structured markup does — which is how we write it.

Why content fails

Three reasons a business blog produces nothing

If you have published for a year and seen no enquiries, it is almost certainly one of these.

01

Nobody searches for the topic

“Five tips for spring” reads well and has no search demand behind it. We check volume before we write — and we will tell you when a topic you like has nobody looking for it, rather than billing you for it anyway.

02

It never asks for anything

An article that ends without a next step converts nobody. Every piece we publish knows what it wants the reader to do next, whether that is a call, a quote request or a related service page.

03

It is written for a search engine, not a person

Keyword-stuffed filler is exactly what Google’s helpful-content systems and AI-generated summaries are built to ignore. Content that gets cited is content that answers the question directly and says something a competitor has not already said.

Content marketing questions Alberta businesses ask

How long does content marketing take to work?

Longer than anyone selling it likes to admit. A new page on an established site can pick up impressions within weeks, but building enough authority to rank for competitive commercial terms typically takes six to twelve months of consistent publishing. If you need enquiries this month, ads are the honest answer and we will say so.

Do you use AI to write the content?

We use AI as a research and drafting aid, and every piece is written and edited by a person who checks the facts. Pure AI output reads like every other page on the topic and says nothing new, which is exactly what search engines and AI summaries are now filtering out. The value is in what your business knows that a model does not.

How do I get my content into AI Overviews and ChatGPT?

There is no submission process. What helps is being the clearest available answer: a direct response in the first paragraph under a question-shaped heading, factual specifics rather than generalities, FAQ and schema markup so the structure is machine-readable, and enough authority elsewhere that the model treats you as a credible source. We build all of that in by default.

How often should we publish?

Consistency matters more than volume. Two well-researched pieces a month, published reliably, beats eight in January and nothing until June. For most local service businesses we would rather spend the first few months fixing and expanding the service pages that carry commercial intent than starting a blog at all.

Can you write about a technical trade you do not know?

We research thoroughly and we interview you. The parts that make a page worth reading — the judgement calls, the thing customers always get wrong, the local specifics — come from you in a short conversation and go in as yours. We do not publish anything technical under your name that you have not reviewed.

Should we update old pages or write new ones?

Usually update first. A page that already has some authority and a few rankings will often move further with a rewrite than a brand-new page will move from zero, and it costs less. We audit what you have before proposing anything new.

Do we own the content you write?

Yes. Everything we produce for you is yours outright, and it stays on your site if you stop working with us. We do not licence content or reuse your material for other clients.

Do you work with businesses outside Edmonton?

Yes. We have offices in Edmonton and Calgary and write for businesses across Alberta. Local knowledge matters here — content that names real neighbourhoods, real conditions and real regulations reads differently from content written by someone who has never been to the province.
