Quick answer

What is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is an arrangement where other people promote your product or service and earn a commission only when their referral converts. The advertiser sets the commission, supplies tracked links, and pays on outcomes — so the cost is variable and tied to revenue rather than fixed and tied to impressions.

For most local Alberta service businesses the version that fits is not a large public affiliate network but a structured referral programme: a handful of complementary businesses and past clients, each with a tracked link, paid when a referral books. Same mechanics, far less overhead.

Why programmes fail

Three reasons an affiliate programme goes nowhere

Most programmes are set up once and then left to run themselves, which is exactly why they stop producing.

01

Nobody recruits the partners

A programme page on your website recruits almost nobody. The partners worth having — the complementary business next door, the supplier who talks to your customers already — need to be approached individually and given a reason. That is work, and it is the work that actually builds the programme.

02

The commission does not justify the effort

Set it too low and no one bothers promoting you; set it too high and you lose money on every referral. The right number comes from your actual margin and customer lifetime value, which is why we work those out before setting terms.

03

Tracking is unreliable, so partners stop trusting it

A partner who believes they referred customers they were never paid for will quietly stop referring. Clean, transparent tracking they can see for themselves is what keeps a programme alive past month three.

How we start

Model, build, recruit

Timeframes below are typical ranges. Recruitment is the long pole — the programme itself can be live quickly.

Model the economics

We work out your margin and customer value first, because if the numbers do not support a commission we will tell you before building anything.

Typically week 1

Build the programme

Tracking, terms, partner assets and a sign-up path, plus the reporting partners will see.

Typically weeks 2–4, scope dependent

Recruit and manage

Approaching partners individually, onboarding them, and keeping the active ones active.

Ongoing, monthly reporting

Affiliate marketing questions Alberta businesses ask

Is affiliate marketing right for a local service business?

Sometimes, and often the honest answer is no. It works best where you have healthy margins, a clear conversion event and natural referral partners — clinics and complementary trades, for instance. It works badly for low-margin work or where every job needs a custom quote, because there is nothing clean to pay a commission on. We will tell you which category you are in before taking the work.

What commission should we pay?

It comes from your margin and your customer lifetime value, not from an industry table. A business where a referred customer returns for years can afford far more on the first job than one selling a single transaction. We model both before recommending a number, and we would rather set it sustainably than set it high and have you resent the programme in six months.

How is this different from a referral programme?

Mostly in scale and formality. An affiliate programme usually implies public sign-up, tracked links and a network; a referral programme is a smaller set of known partners paid the same way. The mechanics — tracking, attribution, commission — are identical, and for most Alberta local businesses the smaller version is the one that actually works.

How do you stop people gaming the programme?

Attribution rules, cookie windows, and monitoring for the usual patterns — partners bidding on your brand name to claim credit for customers who were already coming, self-referrals, and traffic that converts suspiciously well and then cancels. We write these into the terms upfront rather than arguing about them after a payout.

Who pays the affiliates?

You do, from commission earned on tracked conversions. We handle the reporting and reconciliation so you know exactly what is owed and why. Keeping the money relationship direct between you and your partners is better for the relationship than routing it through an agency.

How long before a programme produces?

The programme itself can be live within a few weeks. Meaningful revenue depends on recruitment, and that is relationship work measured in months, not days. Anyone promising a productive affiliate channel in the first month is describing paid advertising with a different name.

Do we need a lot of traffic for this to work?

No — that is one of the reasons it suits smaller businesses. Affiliate revenue comes from your partners’ audiences, not yours. What you need is something worth referring and margin enough to share.

Do you work with businesses outside Edmonton?

Yes. We have offices in Edmonton and Calgary and work across Alberta. Partner recruitment benefits from local presence, which is one of the few parts of this work where being in the same city genuinely matters.
